Polyethylene terephthalate (PET or PETE) isa general-purpose thermoplastic polymer which belongs to the polyester familyof polymers. Polyester resins are known for their excellent combination ofproperties such as mechanical, thermal, chemical resistance as well asdimensional stability.
Recycled PET can be converted to fibers,fabrics, sheets for packaging and manufacturing automotive parts.
Polyethylene Terephthalate or PET productsare 100% recyclable and is the most recycled plastic worldwide.
Low diffusion coefficient makes PET muchmore suitable than other plastic materials for use as a recovered, recycledmaterial.
Post-consumer PET bottles are collected andprocessed through a series of special washing processes or by a chemicaltreatment to break down the PET into its raw materials or intermediates whichare further used to produce recycled PET (rPET) flakes.
Recycled PET is a commodity with many enduses. These recycled PET or rPET flakes are used in several applications someof which include:
Fiber for carpet, fleece jackets, comforterfill, and tote bags
Containers for food, beverages(bottles),and non-food items
Film and sheet
Strapping
Further heat treatment of recycled PETflakes removes any volatiles making them safe and meet the requirements to besafe for direct food contact.
There are two kinds of PET fibers,partially oriented yarn (POY) and staple fibers. They are utilized for variousend-use applications with different material properties. Therefore, therecycled PET staple fibers and POY are very important because they play acrucial role as intermediate products in the nonwoven and textile industries.
Poly (ethylene terephthalate) recycling forhigh value added textiles
PET bottles:
it can be assumed that up to one third of anew PET bottle is made of material recycled from an old PET bottle. Admittedly,this result belongs to the best in the industry, however, market trendsindicate a growing share of RPET materials in the production of new packaging.
Textile fibres:
Particular properties such as tensilestrength, abrasion resistance, and low moisture absorbing capacity, make PETthe most important raw material for manufacturing synthetic fibres. Textilesmade of PET are crease resistant, weather resistant and fast-drying, whichmakes them an excellent choice for manufacturing sports clothing - everyone canmake a use of a cosy polar fleece in winter time.
Packing straps:
Perfectly fit for binding loads of variablevolume. They feature excellent performance during packing of products storedoutdoors, are resistant to high temperatures and UV radiation. Unlike steelstraps, polyester (PET) straps do not cause damage to edges of packed goods, donot corrode, do not leave rusty stains and are very cost-effective in use.
Polyester films:
Wide area of PET application. Single andmulti-layer films used for manufacturing industrial packages and food productpackages.
Polyester resins:
PET in the form of resins is used as a componentof paints and lacquers, and when combined with curing agents, it is used formaking durable composites on the basis of polyester textiles.
